Advanced Coastal Navigation

The Saco Bay Flotilla of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is pleased to present :

Advanced Coastal Navigation. This 13 lesson course will provide you with all the information you need to be able to navigate your vessel on the coastal waters of Maine. Topics include the latitude and longitude system, chart reading, using a compass, plotting courses, fixing your position, and making course corrections. In addition you will learn how to predict tides and currents, how to use Radar and GPS, and how to use various publication to assist you in voyage planning.

Classes are held at UNE Biddeford Campus, Decary Hall Room 202. Starting Jan. 23, 2008 from 6:30PM to 9:00PM. Fee: $110. For information or to make a reservation call 207-571-8414 or email: aux24sayer@gmail.com.

America´s Boating Course

In cooperation with Saco/Old Orchard Beach Community Adult Education

America’s Boating Course. This is a nine-session course which teaches basic seamanship and safe boating. Approved in all States. Includes color booklet and computer CD. The following topics will be covered:

  • Boating terms, types and proper selection.
  • Trailering tips & techniques for hauling & launching.
  • Required and necessary safety equipment.
  • Handling your boat, docking, heavy seas, etc.
  • The Navigation Rules you must follow.
  • The buoy system, your highway signs.
  • Basic knots and line handling.
